I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a cruise line offer a circumnavigation of Australia cruise. In January, 2011, Silversea is doing just that, with a 30-day cruise, roundtrip from Sydney. Silver Shadow’s itinerary will call on Brisbane, Whitsunday Islands, Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas, Cooktown, Darwin, Broome, Exmouth, Perth, Albany, Port Lincoln, Adelaide, Geelong, Melbourne and Hobart.

The Trollfjord is one of Hurtigruten’s newest ships, called Millenium class. Built in 2002, it seemed brand new. Absolutely spotless, everything worked. It’s got about 300 cabins and a 600 or so passenger capacity (plus the point-to-point passengers). My husband & I just returned from a wonderful cruise on the 134-passenger ship “Yorktown Clipper”. The itinerary was fabulous, a mixture of nature and cities. We boarded this Clipper Cruise Line (now Cruise West) ship in Seattle and set sail that evening. At 9:45pm on Thursday, August 29th, the soundtrack of the Christopher Columbus “1492” movie came out on the upper deck, where all passengers were assembled. While the 21 sails on the Star Flyer came up in the air, slowly, quietly, the ship left the harbor of Papeete. It was the beginning of my first epic adventure as a “sailor”!
