Star Clippers embraces eco-friendly cruise vacations
With the growth in awareness of the impact travel has on our environment comes increased measures by cruise lines to address such concerns. And progress is being made.Solar energy is being tapped by Celebrity Cruises on its new ships, while in aviation, the first ever solar-powered (experimental) flight took off this week.
When it comes to cruising, certainly Star Clipper cruises, which operates full-rigged tall ships with wind power as its major source of energy, is a cleaner and greener way to travel. Auxiliary engines are used as needed, and provide electricity and air conditioning. The cruise line uses biodegradable products for cleaning onboard, and waste is kept to a minimum, and a Star Clipper ship was the first to receive an International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate.
A recent pilot project for dealing with wastewater treatment has also been successful: using a membrane bioreactor system that completely sanitises and removes all solids from wastewater before discharge. We’ve written about voluntourism projects Crystal Cruises is engaging in. Star Clippers has conducted beach cleanups and turtle habitat improvements.
It’s great to know, and be aware, that as exciting as cruise vacations can be, companies are working hard behind the scenes to be good citizens. Read more about Star Clippers.
