Kacey’s Royal Caribbean Cruise Line vacation continues..

Day 5: Tracy Arm Fjord

Today we got up early, around 7am, bundled up in some warm clothes, and headed up to the top deck to view the glaciers. The wind was cold but if you managed to find a spot near the front where the wind shields are, it was actually quite a nice morning. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes floated about. I can’t even imagine how cold the water must be!

Many of the mountains surrounding the narrow passageway were covered in green and had numerous waterfalls running down their faces and into the sea. The whole atmosphere was extremely peaceful even despite the hordes of people on deck snapping pictures and jostling one another for better views.

Views like those found in Tracy Arm Fjord are why people travel from all over the world to explore Alaska. Its particular type of eerie beauty and abundance of undisturbed wildlife are unique to this place and this place only. It is truly something that people need to take the opportunity to see and experience now, while the chance is still available.

At the tip of the Fjord’s passage lay the Sawyer Glacier, and it was massive! Nearly taking up the entire side of the mountain, it was an incredible feeling to stare at thousands upon thousands of years of nature’s handiwork carved into the mountainside, a relic left over from the ice age. The colors were amazing to look at as well! Ranging from pure white snow to a bright vivid blue. The captain was able to maneuver the Rhapsody of the Seas right up to the face of the glacier, and then turn it a complete 360˚ so that everyone could have a proper look. Not an easy feat, considering that our ship was already about half as wide as the passage, and with all the icebergs to boot!

Afterwards, the day was spent catching up on our rest (as if we haven’t been doing that already!). There was plenty to do around the ship between the casino, art auctions, and fitness lectures and classes, but I chose to find a quiet spot with incredible ocean views and settle down with a good book.

Around 7 o’clock we went to the second seating show, starring singer and comedienne Judy Kolba. Her jokes about romance and marriage definitely hit big with some of the older couples in the crowd and even Mark and I had a good laugh at each other’s expense.

After the show dinner was the usual wonderful four course meal. And after dinner live music and a variety of shows, such as the “Love and Marriage” game show, similar to the television program The Newlywed Game.  Of course the casino is open late into the night as well. There is always something going on on a cruise ship, even if it is just curling up in bed and getting ready for your next day at sea.
